Urban Planner: December 7, 2009

  • Dec. 7th, 2009 at 7:00 AM

Urban Planner is Torontoist's guide to what's on in Toronto, published every weekday morning, and in a weekend edition Friday afternoons. If you have an event you'd like considered, email all of its details—as well as images, if you've got any—to events@torontoist.com.

COMEDY: The Frantics comedy troupe are reuniting tonight, thirty years after they first took the stage together, for a one-night-only performance at The Royal Theatre. Peter Wildman, Rick Green, Paul Chato, and Dan Redican will team up to re-create their classic characters, like Mr. Canoehead, and skits like "Boot To The Head." Together, the group is best known for their CBC radio show Frantic Times, TV show Four on the Floor, and comedy album, also called Frantic Times. Separately, they've been involved in some of Canada's funniest TV shows (The Red Green Show, The Kids in the Hall). The Royal Theatre (608 College Street), 7:30 p.m., $10 in advance ($15 sat the door).

MUSIC: Leon Redbone is a musician who brings new life to the jazz, blues, and pop music of the 1920s and '30s—he's also a well-known liar. Tonight is the second of three solo shows from Redbone—a rare treat from this generally reclusive entertainer. Redbone is not just a jazz and blues musician, he's also a consummate performer, dressing in vaudevillian clothing and obscuring his own identity in order to perpetuate the myths he's created around himself (he's said that he was born on October 29, 1929—the day of the U.S. stock market crash—and there were rumours in the 1970s that he was actually comedian Andy Kaufman). Although he started playing clubs in Toronto in the '70s, Redbone rarely makes appearances here so this may be one of your last chances to see him. Pianist Paul Asaro will accompany Redbone, while poet and humourist Holmes Hooke will open the show with some spoken word. Hugh's Room (2261 Dundas Street West), doors at 6 p.m. (show at 8:30 p.m.), $47.50 in advance ($55 at the door).

FILM: Celina Agaton created Films That Move because she saw the potential in new media for community engagement and thought a film series would be a perfect way to get people involved and informed. The series is billed as a "free social change film series," where all types of people—"education, non-profit, communications, and government communities"—are welcome. Tonight is Films That Move's launch, and the inaugural screening will be director Marc Colucci's Lemonade. Lemonade is about how, with a little creativity, people who once worked in large advertising firms are still thriving despite the recession. George Brown Financial Services Building (290 Adelaide Street East), 6 p.m., pay-what-you-can.

THEATRE: Impromptu Splendor—the Toronto group that creates improvised plays for every show—kicks off their Christmas special, A Very Mamet Christmas, tonight. Special guest star David Ferry will be joining the group as they curse, monologue, and generally try their best Mamet Speak while creating a completely improvised story. Theatre Passe Muraille (16 Ryerson Avenue), 8 p.m., $10.

I woke up at 3am this morning from a dream that an old friend had shown up, unexpectedly but pleasurably -- and another old friend was walking around in public wearing nothing but a rather regrettable robe.

I'm not sure if this bodes well, or ill for the week.

Whichever or neither, the to-do list is prepped, the felines fed, and the coffee is waiting. Onward, upward, over that cliff!

So, who has the most bizarre/surreal/odd item on their to-do list? Step forward and fess up!

Right, stuff.

#1: Spouse didn't sleep well, and since he has the hour-plus drive to work and back, he gets to sleep in.

#2: Kid is insisting that she still feels "murgle." No fever, though. I dunno, if she's not better by bus-time, I think I'll call her in sick. Crankykid at school is probably not a good idea.

Edit: Kid is staying home.

#3: The bread pudding -- made from the supremely-mediocre cornbread -- turned out pretty decent. (Took the whole 45 minutes to set, interestingly.) It's not very sweet (I probably shoulda added more sugar after all), but it's much sweeter than it was, and it makes a kind of nice breakfast-pudding, as opposed to a dessert-pudding. Total recipe: 3/4ths of a small, flat loaf of mediocre cornbread, sliced, cubed, and crumbled appropriately. About 3/4ths of a courtland apple that was going off (had to cut away the brown bruised bits, but the unbruised bits were nicely white), chopped up to about raisin-sized pieces. 1/4 cup sugar. 2 cups milk (well, 1 and 3/4ths cups milk and 1/4th remaining egg nog). 2 eggs. A slight bit over 1/4 tsp vanilla. All in a square baking pan... 9x9x2? Oven at 350F. 45 minutes till the thing set and wasn't having obviously runny bits. (I was adapting http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1840,156179-243195,00.html .) I'd call it "wild turkey cornbread," but the turkeys probably won't get any of it.

#4: The washing machine is defunct. One of the bearings has gone, and now it's getting bearing grease on the clothes, in these rust-colored dots from where they press against the drain-holes in the drum. There is a huge pile of laundry; the kid has no warm pants left. I have to take the laundry over to the parents-in-law's house today or something. We were going to go look at washing machines at a local appliance place on Saturday, but recall that the child was sick? Yeah, we didn't go aaaaanywhere.

#5: The kid is saying she still feels bleh. While this does mean I will be able to dunk her in the tub today and get her hair thoroughly washed, it also provides logistical grouchiness over going and getting everything else washed. Maybe I can haul her over for a load of laundry and back for a bath... And it would mean that I wouldn't have to worry about laundry and school bus logistics...

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Characters: Cadman/Lorne
Prompt: #055 Spirit
Word Count: 1.573
Rating: K+
Summary: Writing condolence letters has never been Laura Cadman's strongest suit.
Author's Notes: And another one... this one was also written for [info]sg_rarepairings (the prompt was Gen - Laura Cadman & Evan Lorne, comfort) and could actually be a kind of companion piece to "A rugged and ready crew", since it features the Marines' Hymn, whereas the other one featured an Air Force song (yeah, I'm being Captain Obvious here... sorry :S). BTW, on the writing front... I'm done with 96 prompts and have four to go (started writing the 97th piece yesterday but forced myself to go to bed before I could finish it because I figured I need to stop hacking my jaws into things I can very well finish the next day ;)). That, of course, is all [info]mackenziesmomma's merit because she keeps pushing me forward as relentlessly as every self-respecting beta should. You rock, mac! And here's the LDT.

OMG, you guys are awesome. Thank you to everyone who sent a snowflake cookie. You have made me very hungry for a sugar cookie. And happy. Every time I checked my email I'd have a new notification for a virtual gift, but you know, not any actual comments. *glares at lj*

Thank you also for the concern for my neighbor. I still don't know what happened last night and I didn't want to knock on their door and bother them if they were back home. I'm doing laundry today and since I walk past their apartment to do it, I'll see if they're home then. Other than that last night, nothing bad happened today. No phone calls with bad news or anything, so it was on ok day.

up too early.

I woke up at 4:30 this morning, which isn’t in and of itself unusual. My complete inability to go back to sleep was, though, so after an hour of lying there wide awake I just got up. Consequently, before 8am I’ve edited a short story and reduced my inbox from over 1350 messages down to 16, partially based on the decision that any email over a year old could be summarily deleted because I was obviously never going to answer it.

An hour and a half ago I thought, “Hey, I could make bread and it’d be ready by 9:30am!” and went to do that. Unfortunately, it appears our oven isn’t working. I figure it must have something to do with the power outage that melted the freezer, but everything else on that wall, including the stovetop, is working, so I don’t think it’s a circuit breaker and I have no clue what to do to fix it. So no bread.

I guess I’ll go do some yoga stretches, and shower, and go to the post office to find out what package we missed. It seems likely I’ll need a nap by noon, but I might as well be effective in the morning hours.

eta yay ted fixed the oven and is making bread!
eta 2 went to the post office to pick up package (french language editions of HANDS OF FLAME! yay!). went to Mom & Dad’s to pick up cats. have now had 2nd breakfast of oatmeal & fresh raspberries. all this and it’s only 10:40am!

Virtual snowflakes!!

  • Dec. 7th, 2009 at 5:29 AM
I'd like to thank the very sweet (but anonymous) soul who sent me the virtual snowflake.

It was a ray of sunshine that I very much needed. Thank you so much.

:)

I have to say, this is pretty damned funny.

Usually, I hate having a hangover. But the story behind this one is ace.

As most of you know, I'm something of a wine enthusiast. I've tasted some expensive, infamous, and unusual stuff in my time, usually by pure luck. Champagne, however, is a different animal; I haven't had it quite as often, largely because I don't usually care for the taste of it. That said, I find cava pretty tolerable; a friend bought me a very nice bottle of it several years ago, and I really enjoyed it.

Here's where the Good Omens geekery kicks in: until yesterday, I had never had the chance to try Moët & Chandon (you know, the Queen song reference to it that makes him wonder who Moey and Chandon are - which, by the way, if he'd wondered that out loud and Aziraphale had been in the passenger seat, I'm convinced he'd have got a crack across the back of the head). This is mostly because it never retails for less than about £30 a bottle, no matter what shop you're in.

Anyway, at a gathering of friends and acquaintances at the University of Leeds yesterday (at which I finally met [info]amchau), some bewilderingly kind soul had brought not one, but four bottles of the stuff. Wide eyed, I dug in, and by the end of it all I'm pretty sure I consumed about 3/4 of a bottle myself, if not a bottle. Now, straight up, the stuff isn't totally brilliant, but it's not the worst bubbly I've ever tasted, either. I started mixing it with some cherry-berry juice that somebody had brought along, though, and that was just what it needed.

Now Aziraphale will hit me for having drunk it adulterated from a plastic cup.

ETA: It would seem I have two beautiful snowflakes on my profile page, courtesy of [info]mushroom18 and [info]nomelon. Thank you!

You have probably all (rightly) assumed I've been away because I've been moving. In a new place now, a bigger place, still filled with more boxes than furniture, but it's starting to be kind of liveable.

Happy slightly belated birthday to [info]thisissirius <3 you amazing, jumpy happy person, you, ehe.

Hopefully I'll be fully settled here soon and will be able to fall back into a DECENT posting routine, art included. Still checking my f-list daily, not missing a bit of your lives :*

Much love to all of you <3

IUD

  • Dec. 7th, 2009 at 2:54 AM
Greeting fellow BP-ers!

Okay, I am sure there is a post somewhere here containing the info that I need, but I am in a hurry at the moment, so I hope no one minds if I just make a new post.

Anyway, I recently went off HBC because it was messing (annihilating) my sex drive. I am going to go back on it for the time being though because my husband and I really enjoy having condom-less sex. I was wondering about how my the IUD's(non hormonal) run and if one could get one at, say, a planned parent hood. Also any information/advice would be greatly appreciated. I am a menstrual cup user and I have never given birth. Also, what are some of your personal experiences with them?

Thank you in advance!

Fly, be free

  • Dec. 7th, 2009 at 6:24 PM
So, my guy, @llcoolj, tweeted "Never underestimate people; you can't tell a caterpillar will turn into a butterfly just by looking at it."

Barely restrained myself from replying, "Actually, scientific observation..."

See how good I am?

Bitterly disappointed in the Madeline Hunter I am reading. I had hopes the heroine would turn out to like porn but no, she's a romance heroine and her sexuality is bound by monogamy in and out of her head. When she looks at a naughty engraving she sees the quality of the burin work not the naughty. *deepsigh*

For interesting contrast I'm also reading Claudine Married and it's getting on my tits. If it was just Claudine fancying girls that would be cool because I've been reading girls' school novels since I was of an age to be in a girls' school and aware that I would very much like to be in a girls' school. If it was Claudine and Renaud, that would be cool, I do love a May September romance and Renaud is as immature as Claudine. Or is Claudine as mature as Renaud? Doesn't matter. But Claudine faux-procuring girls for her husband? I'm not so amenable. Renaud manipulating kisses from the less than clever Pomme is creepy. Claudine treating Héléne and Luce as interchangeable is shallow and unattractive. Also, Claudine is annoying. What a whiny, restless, unsettled, self-centred person. Colette is some writer, though.

I've been scribbling furiously all day/night on my [info]hd_holidays fic, and these were a wonderful, wonderful bright spot in my day. \0/ You guys are awesome, really.

So I thought I'd say thank you by spreading the holiday cheer around a little. I've a playlist on my iPod of 928 Christmas songs (yes, yes, I know...I have a wee obsession with holiday music), and I've uploaded 50 of my favourites tonight to my website. I'll leave them up for a day or two for anyone who might like to snag some. Be forewarned...it's an eclectic little collection :D

Right-click, save-as, and enjoy!

50 Christmas Songs, some secular, some religious, and some, well, a little bit crazy. )

And now...I have to be up in 3 hours, so I should probably go to bed. *g*

WBC pickets All Time Low concert

  • Dec. 7th, 2009 at 12:21 AM

Westboro Baptist Church, an independent organization known for its radical anti-homosexual views, has apparently set its sites on All Time Low. In their extensive protest schedule, members of the WBC are planning to picket outside of ATL's Dec. 6 show at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia.

The explanation for the protest on "Godhatesfags.com" references an Altpress.com news brief and reads in part:

"'All Time Low frontman suffers concussion' so says the bloggers and Alternative Press reporter. You may be wondering what in the world WBC cares about these losers - so let me break it down for you. How do you know how far gone a society is? You look at their social icons. When you look at these gender-confused, haphazard freakazoids then you can plainly see that america is DOOMED, for real! This is the final generation, and a little concussion is the least of their worries. Here is what they have to look forward to when this once great nation finally falls - for her fall is already started."

A WBC member tweeted to ATL frontman Alex Gaskarth that "God Hates Fag Enablers! WBC will picket All Time Low's concert in Philly." Gaskarth replied, "Stay home. Intolerance isn't welcome at our show."

Summit Can't Get Enough of Those Vamps

  • Dec. 7th, 2009 at 2:45 AM

Summit Entertainment ("The Twilight Saga") is developing an action-oriented take on Dracula titled "Vlad," written by actor Charlie Hunnam.

The studio is in negotiations with music video and photographer Anthony Mandler (Nelly Furtado's "Maneater," Rihanna's "Disturbia") to direct. Brad Pitt is producing with Dede Gardner via the duo's Plan B Entertainment production company.

"Vlad" centers on Dracula as a young prince; he is known to history as Vlad the Impaler, the man behind the Dracula myth.

I wouldn't be surprised if Summit revises their logo to have bats flying out of it, or sparkling vampires or some other shit like that.

Narcissists: Chapter 4

  • Dec. 7th, 2009 at 3:05 AM
Title:Narcissists
Pairing:Fred/George
Genre: Angst, Romance
Adult Content:NC-17
Length: 4/?
Summary: What do you call yourself when you fall in love with your reflection?
Disclaimer:I don't own any of these characters, places, yada, yada, yada. The almighty J.K. Rowling does. I just like playing with them. Of course this isn't a library so I can't promise they will come back in good condition. Sadly I also make no profit off this. I do it for fun.

Save a saber, ride a night elf.

  • Dec. 7th, 2009 at 9:54 AM
I'm not very good at coloring. To be frank, I suck at it, and I figured I needed practice at it so I turned on openCanvas, dug out the tablet and began doodling. The following is the end result after about fifteen redraws and several visits to Photoshop, after a week of tweaking, screaming and just generally losing track of layers, drawing on wrong layers, and blending badly... my Draenei b-tchnut and her nelven lover, por favor.

Putting it behind the cut because there is a night elf without a shirt... and because the image is biggish. )

Critique is absolutely welcome, but don't be too harsh, please... My poor ego can't take severe harshness. Also, tips on drawing hands would be hugely appreciated as hands (and feet, thank goodness for Draenei and hooves...) are my Achilles heel. If I had it my way, I'd just constantly be drawing smirking faces. <_<'

Progress Not Perfection...

  • Dec. 6th, 2009 at 11:54 PM
I'm thinking about how parents have children and promise to love them unconditionally.

That is until their kids tell them they're gay, or going to become a actress instead of doctor they wanted them to be, don't want to get married, don't want to have children, want to marry someone outside of their race or religion, don't want to be their parents' religion, change their political party, dye their hair purple, don't want to go to college, etc.

Makes me sad is all.

And it may snow Monday!!! It hasn't snowed here since '76. But it's really cold tonight so it might. I had to put a blanket over my window. Looks funny but I'm not trying to freeze over night.

Oh! I put up some Xmas decorations! Just a bit. Their so pretty. I've also started my Xmas crafts. And that's always fun.

Well, I'm going to bed and tonight I'll be using my trusty electric blanket. Oh yeah.

No icy pop Kennedy. No, no, no. I'm amuse myself. Hee.

The Things I Write Now

That Enchanting Scorn

I’m sure somehow there’s a way
to remind you that I still exist
But even though I wrack my brain
I’m not quite sure what that is
It was fun for my life to revolve
around the stories that you told me at night
it sucks to need you when I know you don’t care
and I don’t know how to make it all right

My brain is weird
and you understand it
maybe I was a reflection of you

My path’s obscured
but you were my guide
I want to do the things you already do

You were a rock
you were a beacon
and maybe that’s not all that fair

Or maybe you liked me
until I got boring
or maybe it’s just too hard to care

I’m sure somehow there’s a way
to remind you that I still exist
But even though I wrack my brain
I’m not quite sure what that is
Your every word was my personal gospel
infused my life in so many ways
it sucks to need you when I know you don’t care
maybe this is just the price I pay

My need is weird
and I don’t understand it
how you became important to me

We’ve never been quite
person to person
so maybe I’m just hard to see

I’m silly words
that are probably beneath you
glowing at you from a computer screen

And when I left you
you just didn’t notice
are you ignorant or are you just mean?

Maybe there shouldn’t be a way
to remind you that I still exist
Maybe this shit shouldn’t consume me
there really isn’t much of you to miss
If I fucked up, I’d say I was sorry
but I think you just forgot who I was
I’m mad as hell that I care to repair
the nothing that was between us
